China is
unified and multi-ethnic country with 56 different nationalities.
Apart from the Han nationality, the other 55 ethnic groups
constitute roughly 8.04 per cent of the country's total population.
Although small in size, peoples of various minority nationalities
inhabit over half of the land area of the country. As Sichuan is one
of the largest provinces, it has more than 15 ethnic groups living
side by side with the Han people. Among others, Tibetan, Qiang, Yi
peoples are in great numbers, each having its own life style and
folk custom.
The various
and colorful folk customs of minority nationalities in Sichuan have
attracted people all over the world and add more mysterious charm to
Sichuan's travel package.

Lugu Lake
& the Mo Suo People
Lugu Lake is
located in the junction of the Sichuan and Yunnan province in the
southwest of China. There in a village lives an ethnic group called
Mo Suo who still hold on to a matriarchal society custom. Visitors
and tourists are welcome to the village for a home visit, a good
chance to learn of the matriarchy's happening and development, and
Mo Suo people's life style, especially their interesting wedding
ceremony called, a Zhu Wedding.
"Torch
Light Festival" of the Yis
"Torch
Light Festival" is a traditional celebration of the Yi
nationality. On the 24th and the 25th days of the sixth lunar month
every year it is held in Xichang, Butao and other counties. This
minority has more than one million people. Most of these people
lived in the southwestern part of the province.
"The
Horse Racing Festival " of the Tibetans in Sichuan "The
horse Racing festival" is the traditional games held by the
Tibetans in July or August every year. Herdsmen from all corner of
the grassland assemble happily together to compete on horse races
and do business as well.
