Horse Racing Festival in Litang (12 days)

Litang Horse-racing Festival : 01 August - 10 August

If you come to Kham in the August, we suggest you to join in with the Tibetan Happiness Great Festival in Litang, Sichuan. The Litang Horse-racing Festival is held every year from the 1st-10th of August.

The Tibetan area of Kham in West-Sichuan is comprised of Garze Tibet Autonomous Prefecture and Aba Tibet and Qiang-nationality Autonomous Prefecture with an area of 230,000 square kilometers and a population of 1,6 million people and one million among which are Tibetan. At an average altitude of 3000 meters above the sea level, this area features in many high snowy mountains and broad highland pastures. Here plants of various shapes and colors and numerous wild animals exist, some of which are rare species such as giant panda, golden monkey and takin. Particularly this area is rich in water and mineral resources. The religious atmosphere here is different from that in central Tibet, because the most important lamaseries in this area are of Nyingmapa-sect and of Jonangpa-sect. Up to now only few foreigners have succeeded in traveling in this area.

Itinerary: (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner, N=overnight)

Day01 Flight into Chengdu 2N in 3 star hotel

Flight into Chengdu, pick up and transfer to hotel and then free time.

Day02 Chengdu – Leshan – Mt. Emei Shan 1N in 2 star hotel B/L

At Leshan visit the temple of the Giant Buddha – site of world’s largest stone Buddha image (71 metres). After the visit drive to Mt. Emei Shan. Mount Emei Shan is one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China, which rise abruptly 2600 metres from the Sichuan plain. This peak is dedicated to the bodhisattva Samantabhadra. In the late after you will reach the summit of this mount. Overnight on the summit.

Day03 Mt. Emei Shan 1N in 4 star hotel B/L/D

Sea sunrise in the early morning, after breakfast visit the peak monastery. In the afternoon visit the temple of Wannian Si with its life-size image of Samantabhadra riding an elephant. And at the base of the mountain visit Baoguo temple.

Day04 Emei Shan – Kangding 1N in 2 star hotel B/L/D

Kangding was formerly the capital of the Chakal Kingdom – one of the five independent kingdoms of Kham. The town prospered as the center for the tea-trade between Tibet and China. Traders would travel long distances,carrying herbal medicines from the Tibetan plateau to sell in exchange for the tea grown in the Ya’an region, which appealed to the Tibetan palate when blended with salt and butter.

Day05 Kangding – Litang 3N in Guesthouse B/L/D

Day06-Day07 Litang Horse Festival B/L/D

Day08 Litang – Xinduqiao 1N in Guesthouse B/L/D

After breakfast visit Litang monastery, and then drive to Xinduqiao.

Day09 Xinduqiao – Danba 1N in Guesthouse B/L/D

At first drive to Tagong monastery, then drive to Danba.

Day10 Danba – Wolong 1N in 2 star Panda Inn B/L/D

In Wolong visit the Panda Reserve.

Day11 Wolong – Dujiangyan - Chengdu 1N in 3 star hotel B/L

Day12 Transfer to airport and departure from Chengdu. B

Notes:

There are also direct flights between Hong Kong and Chengdu and also between Bangkok and Chengdu daily, so you can fly into Chengdu either from Beijing or from Bangkok or Hong Kong.
